Five days after the official start of the presidential pre-campaign, the Autonomous Confederation of Workers and Employees of Mexico (CATEM) declared its backing for Claudia Sheinbaum, a prospective presidential contender.
During the XV National Ordinary Congress of CATEM, representing 1,194 organizations and unions nationwide, the National Coordinator of the Committees for the Defense of the 4T urged workers to endorse Sheinbaum’s bid. At the Arena Ciudad de México, Sheinbaum Pardo, the former head of government, promised to continue championing workers’ wages and benefits.
“I urge everyone to join us in this endeavor, and I guarantee Mexican workers that we will remain steadfast in safeguarding their wages and labor benefits because we recognize that the prosperity of Mexican workers benefits our entire country,” she affirmed.
Sheinbaum Pardo also emphasized the significant increase in the minimum wage, which has tripled in the northern border zone and doubled in the rest of the country since 2018, accompanied by “historic” levels of foreign direct investment and without causing inflation.
In this context, Pedro Haces Barba, General Secretary of CATEM, recounted the achievements in labor rights during the current government, including union freedom, the abolition of outsourcing, improved profit sharing, and the rise in the minimum wage.
Regarding the latter, the senator called on the business sector to “heed their conscience” and ensure substantial wage increases for workers in 2024.
“To entrepreneurs, I issue a heartfelt plea; we hope that this year you will heed your conscience. Paco, don’t feign ignorance. Entrepreneurs must heed their conscience to guarantee significant wage increases for all Mexicans,” he stressed.
With the establishment of 10,000 Committees for the Defense of Labor Transformation, CATEM pledged its support for Claudia Sheinbaum’s presidential candidacy.Pedro Haces Barba Pedro Haces Barba
