As a college student, the last thing you want to worry about is being able to afford the roof over your head. But that’s exactly the predicament that one student at XYZ University found herself in when her rent suddenly increased by $600 and new pet fees were added on top of that. For the sake of her privacy, we’ll call her Emily.
Emily had been living in a rental unit near her college campus for the past two years. Like many students, she was already struggling to make ends meet with her part-time job and student loans. But she managed to make it work and was proud to have a place of her own, even if it meant living on a tight budget.

Faced with this unexpected and overwhelming situation, Emily found herself scrambling for options. She considered working more hours at her job, but with her class schedule and homework load, it seemed nearly impossible. She also thought about finding a roommate to split the rent with, but with such a short notice, it seemed like an unrealistic option.
“It felt like my options were limited and I was stuck in this situation,” Emily admits. “I even considered dropping out of school and moving back home, but that wasn’t a decision I wanted to make.”
Thankfully, Emily’s story caught the attention of the local community and her fellow students. Many of them were outraged at the sudden rent increase and wanted to help Emily in any way they could.
“I was overwhelmed with the support and kindness of strangers,” Emily says with a smile. “People I had never met before reached out to offer me a place to stay, or helped me look for more affordable housing options. It was a reminder that even in difficult times, there are still good people out there.”
With the help of her friends and the community, Emily was able to find a new apartment that was more affordable and still close to her campus. Although she had to make some sacrifices, she was relieved to have a roof over her head that she could afford.
“I learned a valuable lesson through this experience,” Emily reflects. “As students, we need to stand together and demand fair treatment from landlords and housing companies. We shouldn’t be taken advantage of just because we’re young and trying to further our education.”
In the end, Emily’s situation had a happy ending. She was able to finish her studies and graduate from XYZ University. And as for her beloved cat, she was able to bring him along to her new apartment without having to pay any extra fees.
“I am grateful for the support I received during a difficult time,” Emily says. “It showed me that there is always a solution, even when things seem impossible. And as a renter, I now know to always be informed and stand up for my rights.”
