This Isn’t the First Killing by ICE — and It Won’t Be the Last

On Sunday, May 30th, in Minneapolis, a woman was shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer, right on her porch. The brutality and impunity displayed by ICE in this incident, and many others before it, should come as no surprise. For far too long, ICE has been conducting raids and enforcing immigration policies with little regard for human life. And unfortunately, this will not be the last time that we see such violence and tragedy caused by this agency.

The incident in Minneapolis is just another tragic example of the inhumane tactics that ICE has been using to enforce immigration policies. The woman, who has not been identified, was reportedly shot in the stomach after refusing to show her ID to the ICE officer. This shocking act of violence is not only a violation of human rights, but it also highlights the reckless behavior of an agency that has been given free reign by the current administration.

This is not an isolated incident. Just last year, an unarmed man was shot and killed by an ICE officer in Nashville, Tennessee. This man, who was being served a deportation warrant, was shot multiple times in his own home. And in 2017, a ICE officer shot a man in the face while trying to arrest him in Chicago. These are just a few examples of the countless lives that have been taken by ICE’s callous and violent actions.

But it’s not just about the lives that have been lost. It’s also about the countless families that have been torn apart by ICE’s raids and deportations. These policies have caused immense fear and trauma in immigrant communities, breaking apart families and leaving children without parents, spouses without their partners, and parents without their children. The impact of these actions is immeasurable and cannot be justified.

It’s time for us to acknowledge that these brutal acts by ICE are not one-off incidents, but rather, a result of a deeply flawed and inhumane system. For years, ICE has been given a free pass to terrorize immigrant communities, and this must stop. We cannot continue to turn a blind eye to the injustices being carried out by this agency. We must demand accountability and change.

The fact is, ICE’s actions are not making our communities any safer. In fact, they are only causing more harm and fear among immigrant communities. The agency’s reliance on aggressive tactics and excessive use of force is not the solution to our immigration issues. It’s time for a more humane and just approach.

We must also recognize that this issue is not just about immigration, but about the greater human rights crisis that we are facing. Our country was built on the principle of welcoming and providing refuge to those who are in need. But now, we are turning our backs on our own values and betraying the very foundation of our nation. We must stand up and demand a change in policies that prioritize human rights and dignity.

It’s clear that ICE’s policies and actions are failing. And it’s also clear that this will not be the last time we see such violence and tragedy caused by this agency. But we have the power to demand change and hold our officials accountable. We must continue to speak out and show solidarity with those who are being targeted by ICE. We must demand an end to these senseless and violent actions.

It’s time for us to come together as a community and show our support for immigrant families. We must demand a just and humane immigration system. And we must not forget the lives that have been lost and the families that have been torn apart by ICE’s actions. We owe it to them to fight for a better future for all. Let’s stand together and demand justice for all those affected by ICE’s violence and impunity. This is not the first killing by ICE, and unfortunately, it won’t be the last – but it’s up to us to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
