Archaeologists Unearth an ‘Amazing’ Roman Settlement
Archaeologists have made a fantastic discovery in what was previously thought to be an unremarkable Roman settlement. They uncovered a theatre, markets, bath complexes and a river port, all in fantastic condition.
Researchers believe the settlement, located in a previously unknown area, was occupied from the beginning of the second century A.D. and lasted until the sixth century . The combination of extremely well-preserved building and artifacts have resulted in a treasure trove of information about the Roman community who lived there.
The theatre, which was unearthed at the site, is one of the most remarkable discoveries and is thought to have been used for religious or social purposes. It stands at the centre of the settlement, measuring around 17 metres in width and more than 40 metres in length. Archaeologists have identified at least four entrances, and believe it was structured to hold a large audience.
The markets, which are located close to the theatre, are equally impressive. They include two large buildings, with an open area in between that was probably used by the traders. The buildings have walls that measure around three metres high, and a pitched roof made of terracotta tiles.

Finally, the river port is one of the most surprising finds. It is thought to have been used by traders and fishermen to transport goods and supplies from the settlement to other nearby communities. The port, which is located on the banks of a river, has a sloped quay and two rectangular pools, along with the remains of several boats.
