Gautam Gambhir acknowledges that KS Bharat, who was part of the Border-Gavaskar series and the World Test Championship final, and Ishan Kishan, who performed impressively against the West Indies, were both contenders for the role. However, Kishan opted out of the South Africa tour due to personal reasons, leaving Bharat and Rahul as the primary options.
In a pre-series interview with Star Sports, Gambhir points out that Rahul’s real test will come during the home series against England in February. He emphasizes that handling spinners like Ashwin, Jadeja, and Axar on turning pitches will be a significant challenge for the 31-year-old batsman-wicketkeeper.
Gambhir expresses hope that Rahul’s wicketkeeping stint in South Africa isn’t a one-off and suggests that he should continue in the role until Pant’s return, expected later in 2024.
