As a student at Columbia University, I have always prided myself on being part of a diverse and inclusive community. However, recent events have left me feeling disheartened and concerned for the future of our country. I recently had the opportunity to accompany one of my fellow students who was forced to flee the United States due to Trump’s crackdown on immigration. This experience opened my eyes to the harsh realities faced by immigrants and gave me clarity on what is truly at stake in this political climate.
My friend, a bright and ambitious student from Palestine, had been studying at Columbia for two years. She had dreams of graduating and pursuing a career in the United States. However, all of that changed when Trump’s administration announced their new immigration policies. Suddenly, her future was uncertain and she was faced with the difficult decision of staying in a country that was becoming increasingly hostile towards immigrants or leaving everything behind and starting over in a new place.
I accompanied her to the airport as she tearfully said goodbye to the life she had built in the United States. As we waited for her flight, we talked about the reasons behind her decision and the impact it would have on her future. It was during this conversation that I truly understood the gravity of the situation. This was not just about one student’s dreams being shattered, but it was a reflection of the larger issue at hand – the dismantling of the American Dream.
