‘Anyone who can bat in the top four can open’ asserts Australia star opener Usman Khawaja

Australian star opener Usman Khawaja has shared his thoughts on the potential shift of Steve Smith to fill David Warner’s role in the Test team. Khawaja, an essential member of Australia’s batting lineup, emphasized the importance of preserving Smith’s established position in the Test side.

Khawaja highlighted that even though several top-order batsmen are capable of opening, it would be unwise to move Smith from his customary No.4 spot, where he has excelled and displayed exceptional skills.

“I consider it a specialist position, but anyone who can bat in the top four can open,” Khawaja remarked, as mentioned by cricket.com.au. “I just wouldn’t want to sacrifice someone who, in my opinion, is the second-greatest ever Test batsman from the position he’s been batting in for so long. The beauty of Steve Smith is he’s an excellent No.4 batsman. He can handle pace well and is really proficient against spin.“

Khawaja’s comments come amid ongoing discussions about potential adjustments to the Australian batting order, particularly regarding the opening slot. While acknowledging that anyone capable of batting in the top four could technically open, Khawaja cautioned against making such a change that might jeopardize Smith’s established success at No.4. Khawaja holds Smith in high regard, considering him the second-greatest Test batsman, acknowledging Smith’s remarkable achievements and consistent performances in the format.

Smith’s competence at No.4 is widely acknowledged, showcasing his ability to handle both pace and spin bowling effectively. Khawaja’s remarks reflect the desire to maintain the equilibrium and stability of the team’s batting lineup, ensuring each player can continue to contribute effectively in their designated roles.
