Jason S. Schupbach has officially taken over as the new president of the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) on Thursday, following the retirement of his predecessor, Dr. Joyce F. Brown. The announcement was made by the State University of New York (SUNY) Board of Trustees, who unanimously approved Schupbach’s appointment.
Schupbach brings with him a wealth of experience and expertise in the fields of arts, design, and education. He has previously served as the director of design programs for the National Endowment for the Arts and as the director of design and creative placemaking at the National Endowment for the Humanities. He has also held various leadership positions at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design and the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
With his impressive background and passion for the arts, Schupbach is poised to lead FIT into a new era of innovation and growth. In his new role, he will oversee the college’s 50 academic programs and more than 9,000 students, as well as its renowned museum and research center.
“I am honored and humbled to have been chosen as the next president of FIT,” Schupbach said in a statement. “I am excited to work with the talented faculty, staff, and students to continue the college’s legacy of excellence in art and design education.”
Schupbach’s appointment comes at a crucial time for FIT, as the college navigates through the challenges posed by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. However, Schupbach is no stranger to overcoming obstacles and finding creative solutions. Throughout his career, he has championed the importance of arts education and its ability to foster innovation and resilience.
“FIT is a leader in preparing students for careers in the creative industries, and I am committed to ensuring that our students have the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world,” Schupbach stated.
Under Schupbach’s leadership, FIT is expected to continue its tradition of producing highly skilled and sought-after graduates. The college has a long history of success, with alumni such as Calvin Klein, Michael Kors, and Nina Garcia making their mark in the fashion industry.
In addition to his role as president, Schupbach will also serve as a professor in FIT’s School of Graduate Studies. This will allow him to stay connected with students and contribute to their academic and professional development.
The SUNY Board of Trustees expressed their confidence in Schupbach’s ability to lead FIT into the future. “We are thrilled to welcome Jason Schupbach as the new president of FIT,” said SUNY Board Chairman Merryl H. Tisch. “His extensive experience and passion for the arts make him the perfect fit for this prestigious institution.”
Schupbach’s appointment has also been met with enthusiasm from the FIT community. Faculty, staff, and students have expressed their excitement for the new president and his vision for the college.
“Jason Schupbach’s appointment is a testament to FIT’s commitment to excellence and innovation,” said Dr. Joyce F. Brown, who served as president of FIT for 23 years. “I have no doubt that he will continue to elevate the college’s reputation and impact in the world of art and design.”
As Schupbach begins his term as president, the FIT community eagerly awaits the new initiatives and opportunities he will bring to the college. With his leadership, FIT is poised to continue its legacy as a premier institution for art and design education.
