International Pressure Was Building to Hold Israel Accountable. What Happened?

After years of conflict and turmoil, the international community was finally seeing a glimmer of hope for peace in the Middle East. President Trump’s much-anticipated plan for Gaza was put into effect, and governments around the world seemed eager to support it and bring an end to the suffering of the Palestinian people. However, as time passed, the momentum for change seemed to fizzle out, and the question on everyone’s mind was: what happened?

For a brief moment, it seemed like the world was finally ready to hold Israel accountable for its actions. The United Nations had released a report in 2018, stating that Israeli forces had committed war crimes and crimes against humanity during the Great March of Return protests in Gaza. This was followed by a call for an international investigation by the UN Human Rights Council. The Palestinian Authority also took steps towards holding Israel accountable by submitting a referral to the International Criminal Court.

The stage was set for a potential shift in the status quo, with international pressure mounting on Israel to end its occupation and siege of Gaza. However, as Trump’s plan came into effect, the focus seemed to shift away from holding Israel accountable and towards a return to the status quo.

One of the major factors that contributed to this shift was the overwhelming support for Trump’s plan from key players in the region, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt. These countries, who have been known for their close ties with Israel, saw the plan as an opportunity to strengthen their relationships with the US and further isolate Iran.

Furthermore, the plan itself was heavily criticized for its blatant disregard for Palestinian rights and its bias towards Israel. It proposed the annexation of large parts of the West Bank and recognized Jerusalem as the undivided capital of Israel, effectively denying the Palestinians their right to a state.

The plan also failed to address the root causes of the conflict, such as the ongoing occupation and the blockade of Gaza, which has been described as a form of collective punishment by the UN. Instead, it focused on economic incentives and promised to pour billions of dollars into the Palestinian economy, which many saw as an attempt to buy off the Palestinians’ legitimate rights.

As the world watched this unfold, it became clear that the international community was once again prioritizing political and economic interests over justice and human rights. The US, which has long been seen as a mediator in the region, had now clearly taken sides and was pushing for a plan that only further entrenched the status quo.

The failure of the international community to hold Israel accountable is not a new phenomenon. For decades, Israel has been able to act with impunity, committing countless human rights violations against the Palestinian people, with little to no consequences. This has only emboldened the Israeli government and allowed it to continue its illegal actions.

But the question remains, why did the international community fail to seize this opportunity to hold Israel accountable? Some may argue that it was due to the lack of political will, while others may blame the influence of powerful pro-Israel lobbying groups. Whatever the reason may be, one thing is clear – the status quo is not sustainable, and the Palestinian people deserve justice and freedom.

The recent escalation of violence in Gaza is a stark reminder of the urgent need for a just and lasting solution to the conflict. The international community must not turn a blind eye to the suffering of the Palestinian people and must hold Israel accountable for its actions. The UN and other international bodies must continue to push for an independent investigation into the atrocities committed in Gaza and work towards a resolution that upholds the rights and dignity of the Palestinian people.

It is time for the world to stand up for what is right and to put an end to the injustices faced by the Palestinian people. The Trump plan may have stalled any progress towards peace, but it should not be seen as the end of efforts to hold Israel accountable. The international community must continue to pressure for a just and equitable solution that respects the rights of both Palestinians and Israelis. Only then can we truly achieve lasting peace in the region.
