VA says it is ready to move forward with 4 Michigan deployments

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has been working tirelessly to improve the healthcare services provided to our nation’s veterans. In 2017, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) made 18 recommendations for the VA’s new electronic health record, Oracle Health. However, in their latest status report released on Monday, the GAO has found that the VA has only partially implemented two of these recommendations, leaving 16 still to be fully implemented.

While this may seem like a setback, it is important to note that the VA has made significant progress in implementing the recommendations. In fact, the GAO report states that the VA has fully implemented two of the recommendations and partially implemented 14 others. This is a testament to the VA’s commitment to continuously improve and provide the best possible care for our veterans.

One of the recommendations that has been fully implemented is the development of a comprehensive training plan for VA staff. This is crucial in ensuring that all staff members are well-equipped to use the new electronic health record system effectively. The VA has also made progress in implementing the recommendation to establish a governance structure for the project, with the creation of a program management office and a steering committee.

The GAO report also highlights the VA’s efforts to improve data migration and testing processes, which are essential for a successful implementation of the new system. The VA has also taken steps to address cybersecurity concerns, another recommendation made by the GAO. These efforts demonstrate the VA’s commitment to ensuring the security and privacy of our veterans’ health information.

Despite the progress made, there is still work to be done. The GAO has identified two recommendations that have not been implemented at all, including the development of a comprehensive risk management plan. However, the VA has assured that they are working diligently to address these recommendations and will continue to make progress in the coming months.

It is important to note that the implementation of a new electronic health record system is a complex and challenging task. The VA is not only responsible for implementing the recommendations made by the GAO, but also for ensuring that the new system is user-friendly, efficient, and meets the needs of our veterans. This requires extensive planning, testing, and collaboration with various stakeholders.

The VA’s efforts to implement the recommendations made by the GAO are commendable. It is evident that the VA is committed to providing our veterans with the best possible healthcare services and is taking the necessary steps to ensure the success of the new electronic health record system. The VA’s dedication to continuous improvement and their willingness to address any challenges that may arise is a testament to their commitment to our veterans.

In conclusion, while the GAO’s latest status report may indicate that the VA has not fully implemented all of the recommendations for the new electronic health record system, it is important to recognize the significant progress that has been made. The VA’s efforts to continuously improve and provide the best possible care for our veterans should be commended. We have no doubt that the VA will continue to work diligently to address the remaining recommendations and successfully implement the new electronic health record system for the benefit of our nation’s heroes.
