This 16-Year-Old American Is Among Hundreds of Palestinian Children Jailed in Israel

Mohammed Ibrahim is just one of more than 300 Palestinian children who are currently being held indefinitely in Israeli custody. This 16-year-old American, born and raised in Florida, never imagined that he would end up in a prison cell in a foreign country.

Mohammed’s story is unfortunately not unique. For decades, Israel has been arresting and detaining Palestinian children, often without charge or trial, in violation of international law. According to human rights organizations, there are currently around 350 Palestinian children being held in Israeli prisons and detention centers.

Mohammed’s journey to prison began when he traveled to Palestine to visit his family in the West Bank. He had always dreamed of connecting with his roots and getting to know his extended family. However, his trip took a drastic turn when he was arrested by Israeli soldiers at a checkpoint.

He was accused of throwing stones at Israeli military vehicles, a charge that he denies. But in the eyes of the Israeli authorities, he was already guilty. Mohammed was interrogated without the presence of a lawyer or his parents, and he was coerced into signing a confession written in Hebrew, a language he does not speak. This is a common tactic used by Israeli authorities to extract false confessions from Palestinian children.

Despite being an American citizen, Mohammed was treated no differently than any other Palestinian child. He was subjected to physical and psychological abuse during his interrogation, and was even threatened with harm to his family if he did not cooperate.

Mohammed’s case is just one example of the systemic abuse and injustice faced by Palestinian children in Israeli custody. They are often subjected to solitary confinement, denied access to education and healthcare, and are often transferred to prisons inside Israel, in violation of international law.

But Mohammed’s case has garnered more attention due to his American citizenship. His family and human rights organizations have been calling for his release, and his case has been brought to the attention of the United States government. However, many other Palestinian children do not have the same level of support and are left to suffer in silence.

In the midst of this injustice, there is hope. Organizations such as Defense for Children International – Palestine (DCIP) are working tirelessly to advocate for the rights of Palestinian children in Israeli custody. They provide legal support, document violations, and work to hold Israeli authorities accountable for their actions.

DCIP has also launched a campaign called “No Way to Treat a Child,” which aims to end the detention and abuse of Palestinian children by Israeli forces. They have been calling on the U.S. government to take action and hold Israel accountable for their violations of international law.

In addition, there has been growing international pressure on Israel to end the mistreatment of Palestinian children. In 2018, the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child issued a report condemning Israel’s treatment of Palestinian children and calling for an end to their detention.

Despite these efforts, the situation for Palestinian children in Israeli custody remains dire. But Mohammed’s case has brought much-needed attention to this issue and has sparked conversations about the need for justice and accountability.

As an American, it is disheartening to see my own government turn a blind eye to the mistreatment of an American citizen by a close ally. But it is also a reminder that we must hold our government accountable and demand that they take action to protect the rights of all children, regardless of their nationality or ethnicity.

Mohammed’s case is a call to action for all of us. We must continue to raise awareness, put pressure on our governments, and support organizations like DCIP in their fight for justice and the rights of Palestinian children.

No child should ever have to endure what Mohammed and hundreds of other Palestinian children are going through. It is time for the international community to take a stand and demand an end to this injustice. Only then can we truly say that we are working towards a more just and peaceful world for all children.
