At the 2024 ARCEO Summit hosted by Women’s Wear Daily (WWD), a panel of esteemed fashion industry professionals came together to discuss their careers and the release of WWD’s new book, “Black in Fashion.” The event, held at the luxurious ARCEO Hotel, was a celebration of diversity and inclusivity in the fashion world.
The panelists, all successful and influential individuals in their respective fields, shared their personal journeys and experiences as black professionals in the fashion industry. They also discussed the significance of WWD’s latest publication, which highlights the contributions and impact of black individuals in the world of fashion.
The panel was moderated by WWD’s Editor-in-Chief, who opened the discussion by acknowledging the lack of representation and diversity in the fashion industry. She emphasized the importance of recognizing and celebrating the achievements of black individuals in the industry, and how WWD’s new book aims to do just that.
The first panelist to speak was renowned fashion designer, Jasmine Williams. With her eponymous label, Williams has made a name for herself in the industry with her bold and innovative designs. She shared her journey of breaking into the fashion world as a black woman and the challenges she faced along the way.
“I remember being told that my designs were ‘too urban’ or ‘not marketable enough’,” Williams recalled. “But I refused to let those comments discourage me. I knew that my designs were a reflection of my culture and identity, and I wanted to showcase that in the fashion world.”
Williams’ determination and talent have paid off, as she has become a successful and respected designer, paving the way for other black designers to follow in her footsteps.
Next, the panelists heard from Marcus Thompson, a fashion photographer who has worked with some of the biggest names in the industry. Thompson shared his experience of being one of the few black photographers in the fashion world and how he has used his platform to showcase diversity in his work.
“I’ve always believed that representation matters,” Thompson stated. “As a black photographer, I make it a point to showcase models of all races and ethnicities in my work. I want to break the stereotype that only certain types of people can be considered beautiful or fashionable.”
Thompson’s powerful images have not only graced the pages of top fashion magazines but have also sparked important conversations about diversity and inclusivity in the industry.
The panel also included fashion journalist, Aisha Johnson, who has been a trailblazer in the industry with her honest and thought-provoking articles. Johnson shared her experience of being a black woman in a predominantly white and male-dominated field.
“I’ve faced many challenges and obstacles in my career, but I’ve never let them stop me from speaking my truth,” Johnson said. “I believe that as a journalist, it is my responsibility to shed light on important issues and bring about change in the industry.”
Johnson’s powerful words and fearless approach to journalism have earned her respect and admiration from her peers and readers alike.
The final panelist to speak was fashion entrepreneur, Michael Davis. Davis is the founder of a successful fashion brand that focuses on sustainable and ethical practices. He shared his journey of starting his business and the importance of diversity and inclusivity in the fashion industry.
“As a black entrepreneur, I have faced many challenges and setbacks, but I have also been fortunate to have a supportive community that has helped me along the way,” Davis shared. “I believe that diversity and inclusivity are not just buzzwords, but essential values that every fashion brand should embrace.”
The panelists’ inspiring stories and insights left the audience feeling motivated and empowered. They also highlighted the importance of initiatives like WWD’s “Black in Fashion” book, which aims to bring more visibility and recognition to black individuals in the industry.
