When Corcho Rodríguez acquired Yellow Rose, an exquisite ranch in La Barra, Punta del Este, in 1998, it captured the attention of magazines not just for its picturesque setting but also for the romantic narrative attached. The yellow roses symbolized his love story with the prominent television diva, Susana Giménez, with whom he was romantically linked at the time. After parting ways with Susana, Corcho focused on redefining Yellow Rose into one of the most beautiful country estates in the East. Over the years, he transformed it into a multifaceted venue, including a polo club and a winery.
To showcase his commitment to Uruguayan polo and mark his venture into the wine business, Corcho hosted a grand barbecue at Yellow Rose. Unbeknownst to most guests, a house wine was served at the event. The unlabeled wine garnered genuine praise, with seasoned connoisseurs like Adolfo Cambiaso Sr. and Eduardo Costantini expressing appreciation. Corcho Rodríguez shared that they have been working on producing the wine for seven years, emphasizing a commitment to quality over commercial quantity.
The vineyard, occupying four hectares of land, features varieties like tannat, merlot, or pinot noir. Corcho’s preference is pinot noir for its softness and body, and the production is modeled after a Romanée Conti wine, setting a high standard. With a minimal intervention approach, the vineyard practices natural cultivation without irrigation or chemicals, although not officially organic. The first production in 2011 yielded a mere thousand bottles due to stringent quality standards. Despite facing challenges in subsequent years, the current goal is to produce 5,000 bottles this year.
Corcho Rodríguez’s interest in wine production extends beyond personal enjoyment, demonstrating a deep understanding of the process. The wine, currently not available for commercial sale, aims for exclusive distribution in selected restaurants and establishments. Corcho envisions it as the Yellow Rose house wine. As part of his commitment to the polo club, a book detailing Yellow Rose’s equestrian activities, club achievements, and lifestyle will accompany the wine, reinforcing its unique identity beyond varietals.
